St. Michael completed the 2021 season with a 6-3 record. Last year St. Michael just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 4A region one with a 3-3 region record. The Cardinals enjoyed the first winning season in the school's history in 2021. No team at St. Michael ever won more games in a season than the six victories last year. The 316 points scored by the Cardinals last year were a team record in a single season. The Cardinals have never qualified for a playoff spot and would love to break that streak this season. The Cardinals have never won a playoff game in the school's history. They would like to break through and pick up that first post season victory in 2022. St. Michael is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only five seasons. They have managed a record of 11-28 over the past five years. The Cardinals are led by head coach Phillip Rivers who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 6-3 record in his first season at St. Michael. The Cardinals saw improvement from a 2-7 record the season before coach Rivers arrived. The Cardinals have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Rivers. Coach Rivers' overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 6-3 (66.7%). The Cardinals return QB Josh Murphy, RB Ezra Sexton and WR Bray Green so the offense should be very good as they try to build from the success of last season. The St. Michael Cardinals will play in Class 4A region one during the 2022 season. With a little luck and some improvement, the Cardinals could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season. Unfortunately, St. Michael finds themselves in a very competitive region with other playoff quality teams. They may need to pull off an upset or two to have any shot at the postseason. St. Michael has never qualified for one of the coveted playoffs spots in school history but hope to turn a few more wins into a post season appearance this season. The Cardinals open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Gulf Shores on Thursday, August 18 at Volanta Park. Last year the Gulf Shores Dolphins finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in fifth place in Class 6A region one. The Dolphins ended last season on a positive note with a win over Satsuma by a score of 55-6 after failing to gain a playoff spot. St. Michael and Gulf Shores have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Cardinals have a 0-2-0 record against the Dolphins. They last met in with St. Michael returns 4A All-State Senior kicker Ezra Sexton. He was named to the first team last season. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
